Strange question!!

My brother in law was told by his dentist to stop drinking orange juice. I thought that was weird but he has been brushing really hard with his toothbrush and he has a cavity or two each dental visit. I can only think that maybe the acidity of the juice acts with the ph of saliva or something and contributes to his high risk of caries. If anyone has any ideas of why this is please tell me so I can tell him!! Thanks

Evaluation of my program

For my population, I would be evaluating what the teens learned from my powerpoints, hands on demonstrations and classes/assemblies. I started out my project with a survey and so I would evaluate also with a post survey of the specific school I chose and see if any of the kids learned or started to care more about their nutrition and the affect it had on their oral health. I would also want to do some face-to-face interviews with some of the students and with the faculty and see how teens and teachers were effected by my presentation and suggestions for the school. If I implemented the nutritional vending machines, I might evaluate that by just seeing how much money was spent on its content after a month, and also see what items, if any, were purchased the most. Since my program was mostly educational I really don't know if I could use any dental indexes for evaluation. If I started my program with one then I would be able to compare the beginning index with the ending index so maybe that can be something I could add to my implementation. But for now just the survey and interviews would be sufficient. If anyone has any suggestions, please comment!! Thanks you guys!!

Outline for my target pop

Bad eating habits of teenagers
1-Teen survey to identify exact problem and if it is changable
2-Collect data from surveys and come up with a plan to help educate
3-Identify specific needs and prioritize them depending on time and resources and population need

A-)Develop program
1-Get authorization from the principal of the Junior High School and from the health
teachers
2-Get funding and support from local dentist and hygienists and from oral product
companies for free handouts
3-Schedule specific times and dates for whole school assemblies or specific class assemblies
or health class presentations
4-Develop power point presentations with hands on activities for the teens
5-Volunteer to give a presentation about dental hygiene on career day
6-Round up volunteer dentist and hygienist to open up their offices one Saturday a month
for a couple months for teens who would like more education about diet and the oral
effect, also maybe promote that by giving free cleanings
7-Talk to the faculty about nutritional vending machines and have their cooperation in
promoting them
8-Coordinate with the Health teachers to promote and educate their students about diet and
the effects on the teeth, Have maybe a part of their grade depending on Oral hygiene
*9-Have a booth set up at lunch time with handouts of toothbrushes and floss and
pamphlets
10-Talk with the principal about investing in disposable toothbrushes in the bathrooms, for a
quarter or else just for free

I think all of these ideas are pretty doable the only ones I question and would be the biggest money concern would be trying to coordinate a Saturday for free cleanings and OHI and also the disposable toothbrushes in the bathrooms because that privaledge would just be abused by the students (teens).
I think Junior High is the time when teens are trying so hard to fit in that they will just eat crap for lunch, I know I did. I think I ate ice cream every day for lunch in the 7th grade. If I could teach these teens that Oral Hygiene is cool and fun and totally worth it in the long run that would be so awesome.
* I really like this idea. I think it would really be effective. It would't be too pushy and a Hygienist would be right there watching the eating habits of the population they were trying to help. I know that I would have appreciated a toothbrush sometimes after lunch. I think this would be the first thing I would do after I had presented a discussion (powerpoint) with the teens and had kind of promoted their thinking on the effects diet had on their teeth.

I know I am just rambling on but I think I have great ideas but I would love comments from anyone even if you think my ideas are super dumb, I would appreciate any feedback!!

plan for my community

So for my community like posted earlier I would start out with a survey to see how many teens eat vending machine food for lunch and how many would like to eat healthy things but give into peer pressure. I would then take those surveys and from the information decide what to do. If a lot of teens wanted to eat healthy food and were very concerned about their oral health but didn't quite know how to get started I would want to implement an educational type lecture with maybe the whole school and then like each week or month have individual classes participate in a hands on educational activity with free toothbrushes and floss and cute handouts about oral health and diet and how dental caries can be decreased by eating healthy foods and educate the teens on types of foods that were more cariogenic. I would also offer them opportunities to talk with me as a hygieist privately if they wanted more information, and maybe even offer free cleanings on a specific Saturday or have a school sponsored Dental Hygiene day with fun activities and free handouts. If not a lot of teens really cared anything about their oral health and didn't really care about what they ate, I would want to kind of gross them out with a power point or slide show about people their age and how diet can affect their teeth and maybe scare them into caring!! I know it sounds harsh but sometimes that is what it takes for teens to care about anything well at least that is how I was when I was one and that is how my sisters are. But anyway, I would want to show and tell the effects of none stop eating of cariogenic foods and maybe do a DMFT Indices to see how many in the school really had bad oral habits and to use that as a basis for teaching the teens. When I talk about teens I am mostly talking about Junior High school age, about 6-9th grades. That is when most teens pick up their bad eating habits because they want to fit in. I know that most teens won't change but at least it will hopefully get them thinking about their oral health eveytime they bite into some type of candy or ice cream!! I also think that maybe having disposable toothbrushes at the nurses office or in the bathrooms might help but I can't really decide if that would or not, I could also implement some sort of educational seminar for junior high school teachers, especially health and pe teachers and get them involved with educating their classes and helping teens to be more aware of their oral habits.

Vending machines

I was watching the news a few weeks ago and they had an interesting spotlight on teenagers and there eating habits at school. One school was going to implement a variety of nutritional foods into the vending machines to try to influence teens to cut back on the sugar. I have decided to focus my attention on teens as my community and on the diet that they acquire at school and how that affects their overall oral health. If anyone watched that same news spotlight I would appreciate any info you have or any comments on how teens can better appreciate the affect their diet has on their teeth. One thing to start out my implementation of a plan for that community would be to go to some junior high schools and high schools and just take a survey or something to get a better feel for how many students eat junk food for lunch and snacks through out the day and get their feelings on healthy food and see if nutritional vending would even be a possibility. If anyone has another way I could start I would love the suggestion!! Thanks
