Some aids answers

I have done a little bit of research on aids and have found some really good resources that have answered some of my questions. So here are the links
http://www.cdc.gov/OralHealth/InfectionControl/faq/aerosols.htm
http://www.hivdent.org/DTC/dtcwadushsodd102000.htm
http://www.cdc.gov/hiv/resources/factsheets/hcwprev.htm
http://www.ada.org/prof/resources/topics/hiv/ethics.asp

They helped me to understand that there have been no known cases of getting aids from an aerosol, and there is no statements about using the ultrasonic instrument so I assume that it is ok.
Also, they state whether or not you can use extra precautions such as double gloving. Some patients could misconstrue these precautions as discrimination.

Also, there has been no reported cases of PT. to DR. transmission of aids. Universal precautions were set in place to protect health care workers from these type of diseases.

Some other questions that I have and have not found any answers to are:
  • Does the Ultrasonic Instrument put the pt with aids at any risk because of their weakened immune system?
  • Is there any sterilization procedures that need to be done differently with the instruments used on aids patients?
  • How long does HIV stay alive when in contact with oxygen?
  • How long does HIV stay alive on hard surfaces?

Hey Natalie

Glad to see you're back in blogging action. For your remaining questions, I can't answer them all(because I've forgotten), but I do know that as far as instruments, there is nothing more to so to clean them off. The reason for universal precautions is to protect everyone from everything. As long as you shake them and autoclave, they should be fine. It's kinda scary, but it is a real reality check when you think you are seeing a pt w/ AIDS. Just do what you were taught to do in school (which is barrier like everything) for every patient and you should be fine. Good luck!

Hey Nat aren't you living in SLC?
I am wondering if you want a job in an office on Mondays form 12-5. I have been working there but it is too hard to be a mom and commute that far for a half day. Anyhoo let me know ASAP

HEy, just checkin in! I must say i am really impressed with your research. You never can learn too much! I definitely find myself reading a lot more extra hygiene stuff now that school is out...i feel like if i don't then i'm losing brain cells! I think tatiana is correct, universal precautions are there to protect us, there aren't extra rules for AIDS pts. I think it would be 2nd nature just to be extra careful, but double gloving is not necessary. I remember this exact scenario from McCaughnahooo's ethics class....weird! Good luck!
